Artist Receives Another Second Place Award:

365 Online Exhibition and Calendar Contest

Online Exhibition - June 1 to 21

With this painting Harvey tries to capture a moment in time when a Ferruginous Hawk found primarily in the western grasslands of the United States and Canada makes a surprise stopover in Ontario’s. Migration patterns have taken these particular raptors to southerly wintering grounds and when returning they sometimes will travel through eastern Canada’s Carolinian forests, a unique place, a diverse flora dominated by numerous species of trees.

A few points of interest for this painting are:

* The twisted shape of the tree branch perch lifts the Ferruginous Hawk up and helps orchestrate the direction the viewers eye takes in the composition.

* As a tree, it stands in contrast to the many other trees found in this Carolinian forest.

* The trees gnarled texture and colours compliment that of the raptor’s own skin.

* Sitting upright on top of its prey, a rabbit, the Ferruginous projects a strong authoritative and possessive posture, sounding a visual note to any other raptor that may be in the forest.

With each new work of art, Harvey continues to move away from his comfort zone, choosing to push the boundaries of compositional designs in both paintings and sculptures. His choice of subjects are all well researched and imbedded with time in the field, relying extensively on his sketches and photography as he tries to recapture the initial inspiration when working in his studio.
